HPPCC update

Dear Paddler

Saturday 23rd November session
The Trustees have taken the decision to again cancel the Saturday session this week.  Whilst the river levels are now falling and the river is back within its bank the quality of the water both on the river and in the lake is very poor.  Therefore we have decided to cancel the session.  We do hope that if the levels continue to fall and we have no serious rain next week, that the session on the 30th of November should go ahead.

However, we haven’t been idle during our enforced lay off and have been sorting out some training activities for club members along with a great touring programme for next year.

Our aim is to have a whole calendar of events available at the start of the year so you can plan your diaries in advance.

Christmas Party

Our Christmas Party is up on line and ready for you to book your tickets.  Just £8 per person and under 5s come free.

With music, food, and the opportunity to meet with club members the event has been designed as a family friendly experience.  Your club entertainment team will also be offering entertainment and spot prizes throughout the evening.

New year paddle
Our new year paddle will take place on the 4th of January, and we will be planning to have an option in place in case the water levels rise again.  There is no cost for this event, but bookings will need to take place on the club website and will open at the beginning of December.

Introduction to Raft racing sessions
Our rafting team of coaches are planning two sessions of four weeks on Thursday nights to give paddlers a fantastic introduction to raft racing.  For just £30 you will get 4 sessions, with coaching, Kit and water fees.  Dependent on water levels and abilities paddlers may progress to the WW course.

Sessions start on the 16th of January and the 20th of February

Freestyle pool sessions

We are sourcing a new venue this year for these sessions and so booking has taken slightly longer than normal, however, we are well underway with this and hope to have the sessions advertised before Christmas.

Open Canoe Coaching master class.

Led by Jenna Sanders this will be a master class in open canoe coaching.  Jenna is an assessor for the WW Canoe Coach and Open Water Canoe Coach award, and trains coaches across the country.

This master class is aimed at those who not only want to improve their open canoe paddling but want to understand the technical side of open canoeing.  It will be of considerable value to coaches or potential coaches who need to understand the technical skills of coaching open canoeing.

Ideal for those wanting to do Sheltered Water Canoe Coach Assessments.  Jenna will also be modelling excellent coaching sessions, and will support those on the training day to understand how her coaching links into the key modules within the Core coach training.

Cost is £46 per person and is limited to just 6 places, the event is on the 16th of February.  All 6 places need to be filled for the course to run.
http://www.eventzilla.net/user/hppcc – Bookings available on the website within the next 48 hours and early booking is recommended.  If we don’t fill all the places with club members then it will be opened out to non club members.

Courses being run by club members, but not through the club.

First Aid
8 hour Emergency Outdoor First Aid course 11th January £50 – Keyworth Nottinghamshire – contact [email protected]
16 hour Outdoor First Aid course 11 & 12th January £80 – Keyworth Nottinghamshire – contact [email protected]
Both of these courses meet British Canoeing requirements for first aid, and the 16 hour course also meets the requirements of other National Governing Bodies.
Coaches or Instructors with HPPCC may be able to receive a 100% bursary to attend this course.

Core Coach Training
18/19th January at HPP.  This Core Coach Training course is the essential course for anyone wanting to qualify at coach level.  Open to paddlers from all disciplines, and with no pre-requisites the course gives a very thorough understanding of the theory of coaching.  It is not a requirement to have done the Paddlesport Instructor course to book on to this course, as direct entry at coach level is available.  Paddlers will then be able to book to attend a discipline specific training course, if they have the right pre-requisites.  (Great news – this course doesn’t require you to get wet!!!!)
Cost is £175 for non club members
£150 for club members – contact [email protected] to book a place
Bursaries may be available for those who wish to use this award within the club.

Future courses
The following courses are all in the planning stage and details will be released before the end of the year.

FSRT – Foundation Safety and Rescue Course – Ideal for any paddlers wanting to learn about rescues and keep themselves safe on trips.  A pre-requisite for Paddlesport Instructor

Paddlesport Instructor – A weekend course which is the first step on the Instructing and coaching ladder.  Ideal for anyone wanting to help out on sessions at the club and give something back.  Anyone aged 14+ can book on to this course.  Bursaries may be available.

Sheltered Water Coach Training
This training is aimed at those who have completed the core coach training and want to become coaches in a Sheltered water environment.

So as you can see there is a considerable amount of training being planned.  If you want anymore information on any of the courses please speak to the Coaching and Volunteers Trustee Ian Scott [email protected] who will be able to give you more information.

Take care and if you are out on the water – stay safe.

Regards
Dawn Scott
