A quick reminder that next weekend the club is offering an intensive 2 star training course for anyone who wants to make some rapid progress. This can also be used for the Paddlepower Discovery Award.
Training will be offered in both Canoe and Kayak. Cost is just £30 for the weekend, and starts at 10am on the Saturday until 5pm. Timings to be agreed for Sunday. Please bring a packed lunch or get something from the cafe. Payment can be made on the day. Joining instructions will be sent tonight to those who have already booked, but there are still some spaces available. Please email [email protected] if you would like to attend.
Kit hire and water fees are included.
Candidates who are ready for assessment can be assessed at the end of the weekend.
Coaching on the White Water Course
As you might be aware the club is rather short of White Water Coaches to support our Saturday morning sessions and so we are looking to put in a local solution from our club members who are experienced WW paddlers and willing to take a coaching award.
We will be looking for paddlers who can confidently paddle on the back channels and rescue paddlers, and those who can confidently paddle on the full course and rescue paddlers.
We will then support these paddlers to obtain qualifications if they don’t have any at present. We will ask these paddlers to commit to a rota of Saturday mornings so that we can support paddlers to paddle on the Back Channels, progress to the main course, and then paddle on the full main course.
The requirements will be:
A British Canoeing Coaching Qualification (minimum of Level 1)
First Aid Certificate (minimum of 8 hours)
DBS check for over 18’s
Child Protection Training
White Water Safety and Rescue Training
In house training provided by a highly experienced WW coach
Sign off by a Level 3 or UKCC ME endorsed coach for either the main course or the Back Channels.
Paddlers must be confident on the main course or the Back channels, and able to demonstrate the coaching techniques they are coaching. Not Swimming is a requirement!!!!! Under 18’s can take part in this programme, but can’t be responsible for a group on their own until they reach 18. Bursaries may be available for the coaching qualification and first aid training.

One final request – if anyone has a petrol strimmer and you could spend a couple of hours in the compound we would be really grateful. The weeds are growing dramatically at the back of the compound and we need them cutting back before we can apply weedkiller. At the moment it is rather a prickly business getting around to the back of the boats.
Many thanks and happy paddling
